Upcoming Books

a slight shift, inspired by the Greek symposium
2

Hi All,

Trevor here. Just sending a quick update for what’s ahead.

The next three months, we’re covering these three novels—

-July - Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen

-August - The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

-September - One of These Two Options:

I’m still deciding for September; so let me know what you’re interested in! Leave a comment, with the title of the book you want covered.

I’m releasing the upcoming books in order to make a shift possible with From Argyle Street. A shift based on the idea of the Greek Symposium.

  • Symposium - a gathering to discuss an intellectual theme or idea, usually consisting of one or several speeches that are given and then followed by discussion.

I’m viewing these articles as speeches given on the meaning of these novels; speeches which are intended to foster discussion, which I envision happening primarily in the comments.

However, in order to contribute to a conversation like that, you have to read the books.

So I’m letting you know what’s coming down the pike, so if one or two, or even all three of the upcoming books stand out to you, you can read them beforehand, in order to be able to contribute to the conversation when that month comes.

My belief is that adding this conversational element will only further develop within us one of the most significant benefits reading has to offer—the sharpening and deepening of our mental abilities.

Imagination, problem-solving, empathy, conflict-resolution, and a whole host of other mental and relational tasks—not much develops these skills as much as reading—if we read well.

And I believe adding this conversational component to From Argyle Street will foster that more.

That being said, if all a given month leads you to is some quiet, internal reflection—that’s still a win. There are still benefits to be gained from that.

But I want to create a space where this kind of conversation around books can exist.

Not conversations consisting of reviews, which are concerned primarily with whether or not you enjoyed something. But conversations of interpretation, aimed at understanding the meanings of the books altogether.

Because that’s where the real benefits, the sharpening and deepening of our mental and relational abilities, are found.

So, to that end, I’m releasing the upcoming books, so you have the chance to read them beforehand and, if you’d like to, contribute to the conversation!

So, once more, here’s the upcoming list. Let me know what you’re feeling for September!

-July - Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen

-August - The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

-September - One of These Two Options:
